چکیده

The slow light effects of an amplitude modulated Gaussian (AMG) pulse in a cesium atomic vapor are presented. In a single-Λ type electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium, more severe distortion is observed for an AMG pulse than a Gaussian one. Using Fourier spectrum analysis, we find that the distortion, as well as the loss, is dominantly caused by linear absorption than dispersion. Accordingly, a compensation method is proposed to reshape the slow light pulse based on the transmission spectrum. In addition, we find a novel way to obtain simultaneous slow and fast light. c © 2009 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 270.1670, 270.5530.

Coherent Control of Stationary Light Pulses 1

We present a detailed analysis of the recently demonstrated technique to generate quasi-stationary pulses of light [M. Bajcsy et al., Nature (London) 426, 638 (2003)] based on electromagnetically induced transparency. We show that the use of counterpropagating control fields to retrieve a light pulse, previously stored in a collective atomic Raman excitation, leads to quasi-stationary light fie...

Slow light propagation and amplification via electromagnetically induced transparency and four-wave mixing in an optically dense atomic vapor

We experimentally and theoretically analyze the propagation of weak-signal field pulses under the conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in hot Rb vapor, and study the effects of resonant four-wave mixing (FWM). In particular, we demonstrate that in a doublesystem, formed by the strong control field with the weak resonant signal and a far-detuned Stokes field, both continu...

Electromagnetically induced transparency-based slow and stored light in warm atoms

This paper reviews recent efforts to realize a highefficiency memory for optical pulses using slow and stored light based on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in ensembles of warm atoms in vapor cells. After a brief summary of basic continuous-wave and dynamic EIT properties, studies using weak classical signal pulses in optically dense coherent media are discussed, including optim...
